The DAP secretary-general stressed on the importance of teamwork to chart the party’s path to national victory, and told all representatives to start up their service centres and form service teams in every single polling station nationwide.
“The days of one person doing everything is gone,” he wrote in an open letter to all DAP branches across the country that was emailed to the media today.
“No team means no dream of success for DAP. Regular interaction must be engaged between the service teams, the public, party and government departments.”
He announced the appointment of Cheras MP Tan Kok Wai to monitor and implement these measures and said the leader would have “full powers” to take action against any underperforming elected representative.
Other tasked to assist Tan include DAP’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) members Teresa Kok, Anthony Loke, Tony Pua, M. Kulasegaran and Vincent Wu, Lim said.
He also proposed a departure from the common practice by elected representatives to set up “service centres”, saying “community centres” should be established instead.
Lim, who was sworn in as Penang Chief Minister for the second term after another staggering victory in the northern state, told DAP representatives to make full use of Gerakan’s and the MCA’s absence in many constituencies by filling in the vacuums with their own teams and servicing constituents.
He predicted that it would only be a year before Gerakan or MCA representaties would relent and begin accepting reappointments to government posts.
“In the meantime, this is a golden opportunity for our newly-elected representatives to assert our presence by filling in the vacuum vacated by BN in their strongholds.
“For this reason, the party is placing high emphasis on servicing the needs of the people, to enable DAP to build up DAP’s organisation as a mass movement for the rakyat,” he said.
Lim also urged DAP’s leaders in other states to familiarise to go to Penang to familiarise themselves with the running of a government, saying this would be part of the party’s preparation to take over Putrajaya in the next general election.
“Remember DAP won by offering freedom, hope and opportunity to create prosperity and competitiveness in Malaysia by investing in our people, modernizing infrastructure, establishing clean leadership and good governance,” he said.
“The journey is long and hard. Keep fit and healthy. Work hard and good luck.”
The DAP chalked historic wins in the just-concluded May 5 polls, sweeping 38 of 51 parliamentary seats and 95 of 103 state seats that it contested. With the existing 12 Sarawak state seats that it won in the 2010 state polls, the party now has a staggering 107 state assemblymen nationwide.
In terms of popular votes, it was DAP’s Kok who scored the largest majority of over 50,000 for the Seputeh parliamentary seat in Selangor.
The party also won in all the seats it contested in the states of Penang, Perak, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan and Kedah.
